The Value of a Village

Week 13 with Baby Yanez. Here’s what I’m learning:

I’m learning the value of a village.

When I first started preparing for Shay’s arrival earth side, everyone kept saying “it takes a village.” I’d heard the saying, and knew what it was about, but I didn’t really get it until recently. My parents have watched Shay, Gabe’s parents have watched Shay, but it didn’t really hit me until my friend Jules came to visit this past week.

At first, I felt guilty asking her to help with anything I was doing- I mean, she’s my guest in my house! But she kept politely offering, and finally I did take her up on it.

Once I let my guard down about what I thought I “should” do to be polite, I was able to actually receive help. When I received that help, I accomplished so much more! Not to mention, I also got the chance to share those experiences with Jules.

What does this have to do with you?

I feel like as women (especially), we are reluctant to ask for help out of guilt or shame that we can’t do it ourselves. I see it with a lot of my clients when they try to adopt new habits that require help to get started with.

So what can you do about it?

Where in your life are you not asking for help out of fear of looking bad, feeling guilty, or something else?

Think about your circle: write out a list of all the people in your circle that you could ask for help. Take a good look at that circle- that’s your village, and they do want to help.
